Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Pahalgam attack: 'Supporters, planners must be brought to justice'

Jaishankar Talks to US Secretary of State Rubio After Pahalgam Attack

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday following the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. Jaishankar said that those responsible for the attack—including the planners and supporters—must be punished.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Jaishankar said, “Yesterday discussed the Pahalgam terror attack with US @SecRubio. Its perpetrators, supporters and planners must be brought to justice.”

The U.S. has expressed sorrow over the loss of lives in the attack. U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said Secretary Rubio spoke to Jaishankar to show support and to stress continued cooperation between the U.S. and India in fighting terrorism.

Rubio also encouraged India to work with Pakistan to reduce tensions and maintain peace in the region. The U.S. has asked both India and Pakistan to avoid any steps that might make the situation worse.

Such calls for restraint are not new. After the 2019 Pulwama attack, then U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had urged calm during a call with late Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj. Similarly, after the 2016 Uri attack, then Secretary of State John Kerry had also asked India to avoid escalating

tensions.
